National League, Community Club of the Year 2007

How one thing leads to another!

A try that never was??!!.............................................to………………………….Battle
weary, frustrated, dejected, sickened. Is it luck of the Irish, French or
Australian nowadays? Terry Mullaney was standing in for Steve Evans on the day
and managed to capture this fantastic still from the match day video footage.
At the time of Tommy’s try the lads were well on top and the
Catalans were worried, so much so they took the first opportunity they could to
take two points on offer as they tired and the Rovers battled. Had Mr Thaler
seen the perfect grounding by Tommy Saxton…………., who
knows where we would be now……..
The boys did us proud and WE know how close we were to a fantastic
result! A full match report can be found at www.featherstonerovers.net
The result can’t be changed now and come what may we will not
be in the draw for the next round of the Challenge Cup. The lads gave us a
treat on Sunday and I’m sure their own determination to re-produce this
form will ensure we are in for an enthralling encounter on Sunday. The
atmosphere was tremendous, it was like an extra man at times, but even that
wasn’t enough on this occasion. Everyone takes a lift from the noise generated
in the Community Stand; more of the same please folks!
For the second year running, the Challenge Cup has cost the club
financially to take part, this year, adding insult to injury is the fact that
two players have been cited for incidents during the game. Next week, Tony Tonks
and Andy Kirk will go before the RFL disciplinary panel, both lads could be
looking at 2 – 5 games for two separate incidents not picked up during
the game by match officials. With massive fixtures each week, let’s hope
that these guys receive the minimum; it was after all a very physical contest
with plenty of frustrations as the afternoon wore on!
Hopefully our U21’s will complete a fixture this week at
Dewsbury, having had the Halifax fixture cancelled last week there are a few
guys chomping on the bit, encouraged by what they witnessed on Sunday and
hoping to make an impression themselves in the first team in the near future.
Make the short trip to Dewsbury and watch out for players like Luke Varley,
Matt Handforth and others, in a very strong outfit this year. It was pleasing
to see the performance of Danny ‘Forest’
As well as the improved conditioning of the lad’s we are
also benefiting from ‘Jim Milner’ who is assisting in the
rehabilitation of players following injury. Some times, rest isn’t enough
and techniques can be introduced that speed up recovery. Jamie Field looks like
he is still a couple of weeks away from fitness, though more encouraging is the
imminent return of Richard Blakeway and possibly Nathan Batty in the very
near future. With the possibility of Gavin Swinson making a return, these guy’s
would be a couple of welcome faces back at training.
Study Rovers has success with the co-operative
Group Community Fund
Featherstone Rovers, Study
Rovers Learning Centre, is delighted to
have been successful again in obtaining a grant from the co-operative Group
Community Fund. This most welcome financial support has been awarded to
continue to run the Saturday Club through the rest of the year. The Saturday
Club is for 8 – 11 year old boys and girls.
The emphasis is on healthy lifestyles and
improving self-confidence and social skills. Skills and fitness sessions are
being organised and delivered by Featherstone Rovers rugby players, who provide
great role models for the young people.
Study Rovers is a non-profit making
community learning centre and the projects that are run by them have to be
funded. Study Rovers is therefore delighted that the co-operative Group have
decided to support this very important Saturday morning activity for a second
year.
The whole purpose is for the youngsters who
attend to have fun, whilst developing a positive attitude to diet, fitness and
exercise. We hope the Saturday Club will also give the young people an added
sporting interest in their lives through a fun experience. For further
information call Study Rovers on 01977 781673.

The photo shows the presentation of the cheque from a
representative of the co-operative Group, John Sidlow, to Barbara and Doug
Wilford of Study Rovers.
Some of you may have noticed that the Study Rovers centre is in the
process of a move, this is to make way for the Club Shop which will be taking
residency in the old Study Rovers Centre, possibly in time for the Dewsbury
fixture this weekend or at the very least for Salford on May 22nd.
