National League, Community Club of the Year 2007

This weekend we face an almighty fixture against THE in form side in the Super League, the Catalan Dragons will have never played at a venue like Post Office Road, it will be a great opportunity for us to witness a side full of quality. With our away form as it is at the moment, it is pleasing to play host to Salford at home in the next stage of the Northern Rail Cup, we know that on our day we have a real chance of progress in the competition. ‘Sky TV’ will once again host the fixture, on Thursday 22nd May, Salford have already sanctioned their approval to make special gate entry offers for this fixture in a ‘Shared Gate’ competition so keep watching for confirmation in the near future of what’s on offer. Long before this fixture we have a vital NL1 fixture at home to Dewsbury, a side we have already played twice this season and who will be looking to avenge the defeat we inflicted a short while ago, once again we will be accepting £20 family entrance tickets for this fixture and a curtain raiser from 1pm is in place weather permitting. After this we spend most of May on the road, a difficult but vital period of the season.

Thanks and appreciation isn’t always given, even when deserved. At our last Sky fixture against Sheffield the efforts of Selby Warriors and Upton generated around 150 people supporting the U8’s curtain raiser, a phenomenal effort. At the forthcoming Dewsbury fixture on the 27th April there will again be a curtain raiser, this time the U13’s take to the field in a 60 minute, full pitch encounter! Some of these people have added themselves to our newsletter list and I would like to welcome them to our club.

Our U21’s have made a promising start to their respective campaign; a tight away win at Sheffield was then disappointingly backed up with a home draw against York in a game that they perhaps should have won. The disappointment didn’t stop at the result, Rovers support was surprisingly out numbered by the York City Knights despite the talent on show. This week’s scheduled away fixture with Halifax has been cancelled due to the playing surface at ‘The Shay’ being far from perfect.

The efforts of our supporters never ceases to amaze, the ideas and fundraising schemes we have place are second to none and it is only fair to bring these to your attention. One such scheme supported by Chris Moyles for the second year running (With an increase!) is the ‘Pledge a try’ which I believe is currently running at around the £12 per try mark for this season, it would be great if we could get this somewhere nearer to £15 for the remainder of the year!!

Contributing some £2600 to FRISA over the last 2 seasons, the Pledge a Try scheme is run by staunch Rovers’ supporters - Sharon and Jon Thatcher.

Based on the simple idea of pledging a small amount – 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 (amount is up to you) for every try Rovers score in competitive matches – including the Challenge Cup and Northern Rail Cup – Sharon and Jon are hoping to increase the scheme’s contribution by expanding the number of Pledge’s (currently some 30+ regulars) and need YOU to help them.

Stoically - for the cause you understand – Sharon & Jon can be found in the Blue Lagoon before most home games & during half-time and in the Clubhouse after the game if you want to make your pledge.  They will also collect your pledge money as the season progresses if you prefer – very useful, as with the Rovers try-scoring antics over previous seasons, pledges have totalled around £20 minimum by the end of the season.

See Sharon and Jon at the next home match to make YOUR pledge! The lads in the lagoon or clubhouse will point them out to you. Even Chris Moyles signed up last year and has contributed and has continued for 2008.

With grateful thanks and appreciation of all current “Pledge’s” who helped make this scheme so successful.

When we talk about the efforts of supporters, the list is endless really. There is a tremendous amount of work takes place to keep the club in shape for match days and events and always a job to be done, if you find a spare moment why not pop a long, someone is sure to find you something to keep you occupied! One such volunteer is Stuart Lonsdale who is developing a tremendous website with up to the minute updates as well as some fantastic historical information, why not have a browse; over 4500 people have in the last month alone! There are a few other changes in the pipeline with the website, again a volunteer, who will remain nameless for the time being, but a fantastic Graphic Designer has been lending a hand with some fantastic results. I can almost guarantee we will be the envy of Rugby League once again in the weeks to come.

Any of you who read the Wakefield & Pontefract Guardian will have seen our double page spread in week one, the content of these pages is again written by volunteers who I am sure would welcome some content from all sources. Such has been our lead once again, our illustrious neighbours have joined in on the act and we need to make sure that ours is the best! Drop us a line in your lunch hour!
