One question I am asked a lot is how I came to Featherstone, and why they gave me a job as their mascot. I hope this little story will shed some light on this (and also why I'm called Bluebeard)
Rain fell like tears on the river Calder.
Lightning flashed and thunder boomed as the pirate ship Flatcap was hopelessly lost and heading for the river bank where the waves beat like the drummer in the family stand.
Wood splintered, beams groaned as the ship was cast onto the rocks.
A lone survivor struggled ashore.
He knew he had to make his way inland but the towns and villages he passed through were dark and unwelcoming.
Tired, sore, hungry and thirsty, he saw a sign.
The sign said 'Lionheart Stadium Featherstone'.
Curious, he staggered closer.
A figure approached;
What's up old cock?
'My ship has been wrecked on the shores of the River Calder. I have nowhere to go. I am wet cold and hungry as well as totally skint.'
was the survivors reply.
'That's alright, we've been there too - come on in and we'll see what we can do for thee'.
'Thank you, thank you, thank you' answered the shivering survivor, whose beard had a blue tinge to it in the moonlight.
Who are you? he asked.
'Gary Price mate' came the reply. 'What's your name'?'
I can't remember. I took a blow to the head, when my ship the Flatcap sank'.
'Well we'll call you Blue Beard, and you can stay with us for as long as you want.'
So, that's what happened. To repay the kindness shown to me, I offered to become the club's official mascot and help out with entertaining the kids, and the rest, as they say, is history |
